Today’s poem was part of a special launch schedule during National Poetry Month from April 1—30, 2024. I posted a new poem daily for 17 days and then got knocked off schedule because…I moved! This challenge restarted on May 1 and continues for the 13 days I missed. The final summary of all poems will be sent to all subscribers on May 24 and otherwise can be viewed for free in the archives here. Thank you for being here!
“I ASSEMBLED MY DREAMS AND THIS IS ALL I GOT”
Warning: everything is closer than it appears. The objects of your desire Once fantastical imaginings Singular dart board obscured by clouds and whimsy, Now right in front. Bullseye, as the flies descend. Eyes like the Terminator, lies like honey. Desires turn into bleeding nightmares, Houses filled with children Into barren wastelands Cropped into 800 square feet, Featuring IKEA hacks and Amazon finds, And the ghost kids in the Shining. Keep in mind that the assembly line of dreams Means in front of that, or right behind it, Is something else, something better, Something faster, smarter, stronger, More you than you itself.
P.S.
It’s the penultimate poem of my 30 days of writing poems challenge. This one feels like I should’ve written it in October when I do my annual horror movie watch.
